Signs of a Great Bookkeeper
Great bookkeepers are hard to find. Once you do find a great one, never let them go. But how do you know if your bookkeeper is good, or even great? Every bookkeeper should have experience and accreditation, but great bookkeepers should have more to offer than that. Here are some things to look out for that show if your bookkeeper is doing a great job.
A great bookkeeper will ask questions.
Most business owners might find answering questions annoying but when it comes to your finances it is important to know the when, where, and why. When it comes to making sure all transactions are allocated correctly it is much better for your bookkeeper to ask you what the money was spent on than for them to just make assumptions. For example, if a bookkeeper has a customer who is in the IT business and computer purchases are entered as “Computer Equipment” instead of “Cost of goods sold”, then your taxes could come out much differently.
A great bookkeeper will understand your business.
A great bookkeeper will take time to understand the needs of you and your business. They will make sure they know how you operate and make sure the bookkeeping processes of your business are as simple as they can be. A great bookkeeper will be able to explain what procedures must be followed and what bookkeeping operations will work for your business.
A great bookkeeper will do their homework.
One of the best ways to tell if a bookkeeper is great is if they know the most current laws. The bookkeeping and account industry is constantly evolving and laws can be altered, removed, or added, at any time. A great bookkeeper will stay up to date with any changes, ensuring all their work is done legally and correctly.
A great bookkeeper will make it easy.
A great bookkeeper should make your books clean and easy for you to understand and review. They should be able to fully explain to you why reports look the way they do, and tell you if they don’t know the answer to something. If your bookkeeper cannot tell you what your reports mean and what they suggest you do about it, then you may want to look into hiring someone else.
A great bookkeeper will be trustworthy.
Most people won’t share their financial details with friends or even family, yet your bookkeeper will have full knowledge of all your accounts. Don’t be afraid to interview multiple bookkeepers and ask value based questions before deciding which one is right for you. Whoever you decide on should be someone you feel comfortable with and trust. Your bookkeeper cannot get the best out of your accounts if neither of you are transparent.
